France’s Soccer Jerseys for the Fashion Conscious

Recognize the look? The just released France 2011/12 away kit takes its cues from the mariniere, the famous French naval shirt of the 19th Century that’s become a regional giftshop fashion staple a la Nantucket Reds and Irish fisherman sweaters. This is a either a brilliant and good looking nod to tradition or simply the most French idea possible.
I lean towards the former but I typically bite hard on these little bits of Nike-honed heritage. That and I’ve always liked the look of the traditional sailor’s sweater. Paired with the plain but elegant blue of the new home kit (pictured below) the one thing we should all be able to agree on is that the work Nike’s done since taking over the French squad is quickly erasing the horrors of the adidas era.

Nobody does it like the French. A nod to Coco Chanel? This is seriously brilliant.
